Police Hold Press Conference About Late-Night Incident in South Bronx

Police officals held a Press Conference early Tuesday morning to discuss what they called a “serious situation” that happen late Monday Night in the South Bronx area near 149th street and Brook ave. Officers from the 40th Precinct responded to reports of a Distubance at around 11:45 P.M., according to Deputy inspector James Mcclary. Neighbors said they heard loud noises and what they thought was fireworks before the police showed up. “I was watching t.v. and then there was sirens everywhere,” said local resident Maria lopez, who has lived on the block for eight years. “Then I saw them bring someone out on a stretcher. It was really scary, I couldn’t sleep all nite.” The block was closed for several hours while police investigated. There was also a heavy presence of media and people standing around watching. One man who didn’t want to give his name said he saw officers running in and out of a nearby building and bringing out bags of evidence. “They was in Apartment 3B for a long time,” he said. “That place always had people coming and going, all hours.” Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims, but police say that two indiviuals were found with gun shot wounds inside an Apartment. Both were later pronounced Dead at the seen by E.M.S. Detectives said they are looking into whether the killings may be connected to local drug-dealing activity in the area. “We are aware of reports that narcotics may have been involved, but it’s to early to say for sure,” said Mcclary. “We’re still interviewing witness’s and reviewing survellance footage.” According to one police source who wasn’t authorized to speak publically, investigators are searching for two male suspects seen running from the building shortly after the shots was fired. The suspects were described as wearing dark hoodies and jeans, and may have fled in a gray sedan heading toward Third Ave. “It looks like it could have been a deal gone wrong,” the source said. Residents told Reporters that drug dealing has been a long-standing problem on that block, especially near the Corner Deli. “There’s always people hanging out there,” said another neighbor, who identified herself only as jasmine. “Everybody know what they doing, but nothing ever changes.” Police say no arrest has been made at this time and the investigation remains on-going. They are asking anyone with information to call crime stoppers at 1-800-577-tips. Officals said they will release more info “when appropriate.” Meanwhile, many residents said they are frustrated and afraid. “It’s sad,” Lopez said. “Two people dead, and for what? Drugs? It’s just another night in the bronx, I guess.”
