GRAVEYARD SHIFT

You’re on the graveyard (night) shift at the Centerville Times. You’ve just checked with cops to see what’s going on. Pick the most newsworthy item from these notes and write a story. Deadline: 30 minutes.

11:08 p.m. - Patrol officers arrest man on drunken driving and attempted assault charges. Officers saw man's car, a 1993 Mercury Marquis, weaving and pulled him over at intersection of Norman and Tarrytown streets. Breathalyzer test showed he had blood alcohol level of .21 percent; state level for intoxication is .1 percent. When cops ordered the man out of the car he took a swing at one of the officers and had to be restrained. Name is Fred Winters, 28, of 1103 Parkville Lane.

11:29 p.m. – Campus cops called to loud party at Kappa Kappa Omega house at 1234 Gilman St. on Centerville College campus. Officers find crowd of about 50 drunken students outside the house. Loud music blasting from loudspeakers set up on the porch; several students vomiting or urinating on the front lawn. When cops tried to break up the party someone hurled beer bottles from the second-floor window; one officer was hit in the head. Drunken students started to surround the squad car, shouting profanities and kicking the vehicle. Injured officer's partner calls for backup. About a dozen squad cars from both the campus police and the Centerville cops arrive. Several students scuffle with police when they try to make arrests. Two students receive minor injuries. The officer hit in the head with a beer bottle - Officer Raymond Santos - suffered a mild concussion; treated at St. Mary's Hospital. Six students arrested and face various charges including assault and disorderly conduct. Took about 30 minutes to bring things under control.

11:47 p.m. - Police called to 4561 Chancellor St. to check reports of a prowler. Chancellor Street is in the Cornwall Heights neighborhood, where residents have been hit by a series of break-ins in recent weeks. But cops find nothing.
