Instructions for posting stories to the Centurion website

LOGGING IN AND INPUTTING TEXT

Go to the Centurion website:

http://www.bucks-news.com/

Scroll down to the bottom right-hand corner of the homepage where it says log in. Enter your username and password.

When you login you should see the "stories" button on the left-hand side of the page. Click this so that you are in the "new stories" mode. (Click thumbnail below for screenshot.)

You should see several blank fields, including ones for the story's headline and body copy. Now you can begin the process of copying and pasting stories from the quark files into the website. Open up the quark file for page 1 and copy the text of the first story.

Go back to the Centurion website and on the toolbar above the body copy field, click the text button, which looks like the letter "T" on a clipboard. A box should pop up. Paste the text from the story into that box, then click okay.

Now it's time for the headline. Take the headline from the quark file and paste it into the headline field in the website. Also be sure to put the writer's name in the proper field, which is found below the field for the body copy.

Note: if you think the headline that was written for the Centurion layout isn't particularly good, feel free to write a better headline for the web version of the story.

INSERTING PHOTOS

If your story has a photo, copy it from the PDF version of the paper and paste it into the "Paint" program. Then save the picture as a JPEG file onto your computer. Return to the Centurion site and you will see the Upload/Insert button just above the toolbar. Click that, then click "select files" to find your picture and hit "open" once you find it. A pop-up box will appear. Scroll down to the bottom of that and click "use as featured image." Close the pop-up box.

Note: sometimes the website publishes the pictures twice. If, after you've published your story, you see two copies of the photo in the article, "article again and delete the picture that's in the body copy field. That will leave the story with just one photo.

CHOOSE A CATEGORY

Next you need to decide which category the story should be in. On the right-hand side of the screen you'll see a list of the categories. Simply click the category that your story should be in. Some stories can be in multiple categories but generally we advise against this. Just try to pick the single category that's most appropriate for your story.

Note: if you click "Front Page" then the story is guaranteed to show up on the front page of the website. Also, if you click the "top stories" category, the story will show up in the revolving slideshow at the top of the website. This is a good category to click if the story is big news or one that will be of great interest to our readers. However, only horizontal photos work well in the slideshow. Vertical pics get chopped off when they appear in the slideshow. So only put your story in the top stories category if it has a good horizontal picture to go with it.

PUBLISHING THE STORY

Now you're ready to publish your story. Just click the large publish button on the right-hand side of the page. Remember, if you made a mistake or need to change something later on, all you have to do is make the necessary changes and then republish the story.

When you're done transferring all the stories from the quark files, be sure to log out of the website.
